Well after checking out the weather map and seeing impending storms in Sicily, we decided to head back up north (that and the fact that we feel we are running out of time).
On Sunday we visited Matera, a town carved into the rock face of the valley. It was interesting to see. 15,000 people lived there until about 30 years ago. They had no electricity, running water or sewerage. The government had to relocate them to the hills around the valley. It is now a UNESCO site.
On Sunday we also had a little shop up at the supermarket, a bit few and far between. Decided to stock the meat in the freezer and so wandered through the "Carne" section......pollo (chicken), bovine (cow), ovine (pig), EQUINE.......guess??????
We spent yesterday (Monday) in Assissi. Visited the St. Francis Basilica, walked the steep hills, then sat in the square and had way to many Bloody Marys, so feeling a little slow today.
Today we are in San Marino, the smallest and oldest Republic in Europe, and another stamp in the passport. Will visit the town tomorrow, then onto Ravenna to see the mosaics.
