We started blogging in 2005 when there was just the two of us heading to Europe. Now it's a photojournal of what the whole family has been up to.

16 months - can you believe it?
Mieks was 16 months old last week!!!
Mieks is not walking yet, but getting closer all the time. She is comfortably pulling herself up using anything that is semi stable. Last week she started using her block trolley by herself, which is pretty exciting. She still loves being on her trike and we took her for a ride along the boardwalk in Warrnambool on Father's Day. She was gorgeous. We think by the end of the walk she had probably done about 800 or 900 metres on the trike, which is a pretty good effort for a little tacker. . When we eventually got back to the car Mieks refused to get off her trike. She chucked a tanty and all I could do was laugh. She arched her back and screamed and screamed. Gee, I can hardly wait for the terrible twos..... Her bike ride completely destroyed her shoes, wore the toes out of both of them. They were my favourites too. Little pink leather shoes with elephants on them. Oh well, better to wear them out than not wear them at all.
I still love being home with Mieke and have no desire to go back to work - at all. I'm sure she learns something new everyday, and I feel very lucky that I am able to be home with her for that. We've started potty training and that seems to be going really well. We time it to fit in with Playschool (her favourite time of day) and she just sits on her potty, does her thing and joins in with singing and clapping and whatever else is happening on Playschool. Most days we have success on the potty, so there is lots of clapping and cheering and checking out "wees".
Sam & I had our first night away from Mieks, which was strange, but fun. We headed to the Royal Mail in Dunkeld with the Porsche 356 club. Ate and drank way too much, but had a great time. Mieks had a cold at the time and was pretty miserable so we both worried about her a bit. By the following Wednesday she still hadn't improved and her 'cold' was looking a little more sinister. It turned out she had had a virus, but that had become an infection - in her ears, nose, throat and tonsils. So she was prescribed a big dose of penicillin. By Thursday there was a slight improvement, but still not great. When I got her up from her afternoon sleep on Friday, the trunk of her body was covered in a rash, right up into her hairline. So we headed back to the doctor. He wasn't sure if it was another virus or a penicillin reaction. He told me that if he decided it was a penicillin reaction Mieks wouldn't be able to have it for the rest of her life - which is a big call at this age. So instead he put "possible" penicillin allergy on her file. That way if she needs antibiotics again they can prescribe penicillin and then monitor her closely to see if there is a reaction. Apparently if she does have an allergy the next reaction will be worse. Fingers crossed it was just a virus.
Sammy and I are both really well. Sam is working long hours during the week, so Miek and I love having him to ourselves on the weekend. We are finalising our plans for the new house and hopefully the building will be started before Christmas. We have started scoping out fittings and floor coverings. We started sketching up some ideas for the kitchen too. Red two-pack appeals to me.......
